I first reached out to Patrick Properties wanting to build a connection with one of my favorite wedding venues in my hometown of Charleston. More often than not, wedding venues are the first stop for couples, but it also means that they get a ton of us vendors reaching out to them too. So instead of being just someone else reaching out I wanted to do something special for them. I offered to make a painting for one of their bridal suites after seeing their Lowndes Grove venue. Little did I know that what I intended as a simple painting of a former bride would be so much more!
You see, Patrick Properties had recently lost someone dear to them to and asked that I would paint her bouquet. By all accounts Hamida Patrick was the kindest person you could meet, with a wit to equal her generosity. Her elegant style was reflected in her beautiful pure white bouquet by Gathering Events. I wanted to use the stunning arrangement as a way to capture the complexity of her spirit. After perusing Gayle Brooker’s photos of the wedding day I found a reference that captured just that.
With an amazing reference and a deeper understanding of who Hamida was, I set to making an all white bouquet feel alive. Painting greys and greens to convey petals in shadow, I used a rich titanium white to make the light feel that much more powerful. The only thing left was the background. I used a soft green to match a mid century sofa below where the painting would hang. The end result was a painting that I think captured who Hamida was, and hopefully would make her family proud!
